At Marish Primary School, we believe that education is about developing the whole child — academically, personally, socially and culturally.
Our work around SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) helps pupils grow into confident, respectful, well-rounded and thoughtful members of society.

SMSC takes a high priority at Marish Primary School, it is embedded into our broad curriculum as well as in our extra-curricular activities, trips, clubs and themed days. It is an integral part of our holistic approach to education, fostering personal growth, character development and academic achievement.

Additionally, the SMSC values are also taught through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which is delivered to all pupils from Reception to Y6. The Jigsaw scheme brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development. It holds children at its heart. Its cohesive vision helps children understand and value who they are and how they fit and contribute to the world.

In addition to these PSHE sessions, we work closely with lots of outside agencies who provide additional information to our pupils such as NSPCC workshops.

S – Spiritual Development

Definition:
Spiritual development encourages children to explore their own beliefs and values, reflect on experiences, and develop a sense of wonder about the world around them.

In practice at Marish:

  • Children learn about a range of faiths and beliefs through Religious Education (RE) lessons and themed assemblies.

  • Reflection time is built into the school day, giving pupils space to think about their learning and their personal growth.

  • Creative subjects such as art, music, and outdoor learning inspire imagination and curiosity.

  • Visits to local places of worship and nature areas help children appreciate beauty, peace and belonging.

  • Use imagination and creativity in their learning resulting from our carefully constructed curriculum.

M – Moral Development

Definition:
Moral development helps children understand right and wrong, make responsible choices, and respect others’ feelings and viewpoints.

In practice at Marish:

  • Our school values are woven through everyday teaching and behaviour expectations.

  • Children discuss fairness, honesty, and kindness through stories, PSHE lessons, R-Time and circle time. They understand the consequences of their behaviour and actions on others.

  • Pupils explore moral dilemmas in subjects like English and History, encouraging thoughtful discussion.

  • We celebrate positive behaviour and community contribution through our weekly awards assemblies.

  • Through our curriculum, pupils recognise the difference between right and wrong; they readily apply this understanding in their own lives.

  • Understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

S – Social Development

Definition:
Social development focuses on helping children build positive relationships, work collaboratively, and take an active part in school and community life.

In practice at Marish:

  • Pupils work together in group projects and team challenges that promote cooperation and mutual respect.

  • School Council members represent pupil voice and take responsibility for improving school life.

  • Playground buddies support younger children and promote inclusion.

  • We build strong community links through events such as charity fundraising, and performances and productions for parents and carers.

Acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; pupils develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

C – Cultural Development

Definition:
Cultural development helps children appreciate the richness of different cultures, traditions, and ways of life — both within our school and in the wider world.

In practice at Marish:

  • Children explore traditions, art, music, and festivals from around the world through curriculum themes and multicultural events.
  • We celebrate the diversity of our school community through language daysWorld Book Day and international weeks.
  • Pupils study influential artists, authors, and historical figures who have shaped British and global culture.
  • Our curriculum promotes understanding of British Values such as democracy, tolerance and mutual respect.
  • Understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within our school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain;
  • Children understand and have the knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain.

Our Commitment

At Marish Primary School, SMSC is not taught as a standalone subject — it is embedded across our curriculum and daily school life.
